DSAGNO
is a 501c3 parent support, information and advocacy organization. Through
our members, we provide support to new parents of children with Down
syndrome. Through our publications, web site, meetings and events,
we provide as much information as possible to our membership and others
interested in Down syndrome issues. And, through our advocacy
work, DSAGNO members work to elevate the community's
understanding of those issues so that our children have the opportunities
necessary to reach their full potential in all aspects of our community.
Who We Are:
We are a non-profit, 501c3 organization. Our members include people
with Down syndrome, their friends, families, and the therapeutic, medical,
and educational professionals they see in the community.
Who Can Become a Member:
All that are interested in the issues and challenges facing those with
Down syndrome are welcome and encouraged to join. Family members, community
leaders and professionals are particularly encouraged to join.

Meetings:
DSAGNO
meets every other month. The public is invited to the FREE meetings,
which usually include a topical speaker, refreshments and a chance to
socialize and discuss current issues one might be experiencing. Meeting
times and places are published in the Monday issue of the Times-Picayune
Living Section and can also be obtained by calling (504) 251-8953.
What does DSAGNO do?
Members of DSAGNO
work with community leaders and government agencies to educate the community
toward a greater understanding of the issues facing people with Down
syndrome. We do this by acting as a clearinghouse for Down syndrome
information, advocating in our schools for inclusion programs, working
with other agencies to develop programs that benefit people with Down
syndrome and sponsoring events that will raise awareness about Down
syndrome and the people who have it.
Publications:
DSAGNO
publishes a newsletter 6 times a year with informative articles including
parent advice, a child/family profile, web sites with information regarding
Down syndrome, medical information and research, legislative developments,
information on education issues and much more. A Special Buddy Walk
issue is published in October with details and information specific
to Buddy Walk.
Social Activities:
DSAGNO
organizes family activities each year, including a Spring Picnic, Holiday
Party, Mom's Night Out, Dad's Night Out, Zoomobile visits, and Aquarium
and Zoo trips to name a few. Many parents have also formed playgroups
for children of close ages. For more information on playgroups, call
(504) 251-8953.
Fundraising:
In October of 2002, DSAGNO
initiated the area's first Buddy Walk to promote inclusion and acceptance
of those with Down syndrome and awareness of their abilities. The walk,
which was held on Roosevelt Mall in City Park, was very successful.
Since then, DSAGNO
continues to sponsor a yearly Buddy Walk on the third Sunday of October--Down
Syndrome Awareness Month.
