National Down Syndrome Awareness Campaign Features
Hannah LaCour, Precious Fields and Kevin Scallan
NEW YORK, NY—
Hannah LaCour of Kenner, Precious Fields of Metairie, and Kevin Scallan
of New Orleans will appear in lights on Broadway on Sunday October 19th
as part of the National Down Syndrome Society’s awareness campaign.
NDSS has launched this campaign to demonstrate that people with Down
syndrome can be successfully included in community activities, education
and employment.
The
photos of Hannah, age 4, Precious, age 2 and Kevin, also age 2, who
have Down syndrome, were selected from almost one thousand entries in
the NDSS nationwide call for photos. Approximately 200 photographs will
appear in a video production to be shown on the larger-than-life NBC
Astrovision by Panasonic screen located in the heart of Times Square.
Panasonic has donated 40 minutes of time on the Times Square Astrovision
in honor of October--National Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
The awareness
campaign and video production, coordinated by NDSS, focuses on the theme,
“Steps for a Brighter Tomorrow.” Through a series of 200
photos, the show explores what things will make a brighter tomorrow:
hope, inclusion, laughter, family, friends and acceptance. The production
ends with a fun good-bye by the cast of the NBC hit show “Scrubs”
and a new NDSS public service announcement featuring actor John C. McGinley,
who plays Dr. Cox on “Scrubs.” As the father of a young
son with Down syndrome, Mr. McGinley is committed to building awareness
and acceptance of people with Down syndrome.
Locally, The
Down Syndrome Association of Greater New Orleans will host the 2nd Annual
Buddy Walk on the same day the video will be shown in Times Square,
October 19th. DSAGNO’s Buddy Walk will include Music by the Top
Cats, games by Radio Disney, children’s activities, door prizes
and great New Orleans food! Please join DSAGNO on October 19th at 8:15
a.m. for our local one-mile walk and meet the Times Square Bright Lights
in person, Hannah, Precious and Kevin.
